Cooling Neck Wraps
By Robin Conrads
Hunting in the west can be brutally hot this time of year. Antelope season opens soon, and even archery deer season at the end of August gets pretty warm in the daytime. Here is an easy way to stay cool while hunting in the heat.I make and sell High Desert Cool Wraps. They contain granules that absorb water, and take hours (even days) for the water to dry out. Soak the wrap in cold water for 20-30 minutes, spreading the gel as it expands. Worn around your neck or inside your hat, these wraps will put soothing, cooling material against your skin. If you notice it's not cooling anymore, simply rotate the tube so the outside now touches your skin. You can rehydrate with a small amount of water or soak it again after a few hours. Throw it in your cooler overnight so it will be ready for the next day. When you are finished using your cool wrap, hang it to dry completely (this may take a day or two) and store it away for next time. These can be used over and over again. They come in muted, "guy" colors that aren't necessarily camouflage, but they will blend in with your hunting clothes. They also come in patriotic material and wild and crazy colors. These are great for fishing, hiking, biking, gardening, etc. I actually send a lot of these to soldiers, too. Any time you are out in the heat, you'll be glad you have a neck wrap. Carry it in your pack so it is always there when you need it. Another reminder for hunting in high heat: Drink lots of water before you go out into the heat, as well as carrying lots of water while you are out. It is much easier to STAY hydrated than it is to GET hydrated. It wouldn't hurt to read J.W. McCorkle's previous tip, A Plan For Keeping Hydrated. Be safe out there.
