PAM® for Carbon Steel

The Fred Bear Bowhunter's Kit

There is nothing like a traditional carbon steel knife. D2 tool steel takes a good temper, is easy to sharpen and holds its edge. If properly cared for, it will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, for most folks, instead of the carbon steel turning a nice patina, it rusts, pits and all too soon is ruined. After usage, or in damp weather conditions, the carbon steel should be cleaned and given a light coat of oil. While the oil will protect the steel, it will also come off and taint the game you have worked so hard to obtain.

Instead of using a petroleum based oil (3 in One, Rem Oil, etc.) try using PAM®, the original non-stick cooking spray. Wash the blade with soap and hot water, and dry with a towel. Spray the blade with PAM®, wipe off the excess and the knife is protected and ready for its next use. PAM® contains canola oil and no petroleum distillates so it won't harm your game.

Of course, it's always a good idea to clean any knife blade before using it on meat or other food -- as simple a task as wiping with a clean kerchief or other cloth.
